Cloning is an advanced reproductive technique resulting in identical genes between the donor animal and its clone. The animals genotypes are identical, only separated by time. By genetically cloning certain livestock, the breeder/owner of an animal can retain many advantages.

Advantages of Cloning:

• In case of injury or loss to a particular animal, cloning allows for the continuation of that particular bloodline.
• Cloning can produce a stud animal genetically identical to a horse that has been gelded.
• Cloning can produce a stud animal genetically identical to a sterile stallion in order to perpetuate bloodlines.
• Cloning greatly expands general reproductive possibilities.

The Process:
A clone is created from a small biopsy of the donor animal. DNA is then removed from the cultured cells and inserted into eggs where the genetic material has been removed. These eggs are then grown in an incubator for a few days before being placed in a recipient mare through the traditional embryo transfer process. After the gestation period is complete a clone foal is born.
